Henry Allingham, the world's oldest known person, passed away this past Saturday at the age of 113. Henry had been around so long that he was a veteran of World War I! Before he passed away, he was asked what his longevity can be attributed to. I love this question! Whenever there's an interview with or an article about a 100+ year old individual, that question is asked. I love this question because I truly think viewers are expecting some ground-breaking answer, but it never comes!
What was Allingham's response? He said "cigarettes, whisky, and wild, wild women." I have to admit, I have not viewed any research on the connection between longevity and "wild, wild women." However, if you take anything from Allingham's answer, it's that you shouldn't expect a magical response from these people. In one of his stand-up routines, Chris Rock said there was a 115 year old who admitted his diet consisted of fried bread. I had an ex-girlfriend who's family were all raised on farms, and the great grandparents lived to 90+ years old. I also knew another women who lived to be 102 while spending her life in an urban environment. So what's the secret there?
By the way, two other WWI participants from the British Royal Air Force are still alive at ages 110 and 107. Perhaps participating in WWI as a member of the Royal Air Force is the secret to longevity. Get your time machines ready people!
Rest in peace Henry.
